Welcome to We're Still Cool, Right? The weekly podcast where the conversation flows smoother than top-shelf whiskey. And cool, well, it never really left. Grab a drink and hang out with Erik, Mike, and Shaun while they dive into nostalgia and attempt to answer the age-old question. We're still cool, right?
00:00:30
Oh, Daddy. I feel like you've done that one. I probably have, but when you need something about Daddy, there's only so much to pull from. I don't watch those kind of films.
00:00:46
Hey, we're back for another one. Sorry. Is it the Playboy on the table that got you? I think it was. Cindy Crawford staring me upside down just really does it for me. I totally forgot. It's upside down specifically. triggered a thought. I was going to be sitting here reading it when we started the episode. That's a good idea. Did you want to restart again? Fuck off! There'll be like seven beers right up here with one restart. With one drink out of all of them, because Mike had to crack a new beer every time. Well, let's jump into the drink because this is getting warmer by the second here. Alright, so the drink of the week, brought to you by Benz Beverage Depot.
00:01:24
5017. Thank you, Shaun. you said that like you were starting to laugh before you even said I can see him looking at me so it's the time of year we have bush apples back in season black apples so good apples oh yeah that'd be never mind go ahead I'm an idiot guys we don't usually record on this day I'm a little thrown out so we're having bush apples and we're doing a drop shot because it's still drop shot April that's right and in the shot is black velvet toasted caramel i thought this would be an amazing drop shot to do with the bush apple so for anyone that hasn't had the toasted caramel black velvet don't let the word black velvet it's so goddamn good well i'm only i'm gonna say like i didn't read that part of it when he came in i'm like oh so we're going black velvet yeah yeah all right but i'm like yeah i'm gonna give you the worst whiskey the best whiskey whiskey in the worst. I was like, the guy that's always got the good expensive liquor, he's brought in black velvet.
00:02:25
I'm like, you should have given only Shaun just straight black velvet. That way he drinks, he's just like, what the fuck? I didn't do any caramel. Right, yeah. This is bullshit. I think mine was different, guys. Yeah. I think Jody told me about this stuff like a year ago, and I was like, oh, black velvet. She's like, no, trust me. She's like, it's a good mixer. It's good. It's good with so many things. Because like, I grew up with my grandpa. Like, he didn't drink a lot, but he'd always have like a bottle of black velvet hiding somewhere and you'd have like a little nip of it oh when i grew up my grandparents dog it was a black lab named velvet i'm like that's fucking kind of badass all right let's get this one so cheers everybody at home drop your shot oh no we didn't make too big of a mess by the way logan gently poured his in there's too much expensive stuff over here.
00:03:18
The ASMR, everybody. Did the gulping come through? The gulping, yeah. I have the loudest throat ever. I made a mess. That's a new t-shirt. Sponsored by Benz loudest throat.
00:03:32
They don't call me the throat goat for nothing. But hey, I don't know. I think it's delicious. That's pretty good. I don't really taste any difference. kind of just tastes like bush apple really you didn't get the caramel not really maybe it's because you poured it in there like a boy scout yeah like yeah you gotta take it all down you can't be sipping this thing there is there is some science like to the shot glass it kind of gets you at the end yeah it stays in there and it gets you at the end it tastes better if it spills on the table a little bit there's something to it you're right i'm drinking it wrong yeah i don't know what it is but yeah but uh let's get a fourth opinion on this because we have a guest today. We do! Which, if you're wondering why I brought up Daddy, because, you know, we got Matt Messenger here. He's the drummer for the Trophy Dads. The Trophy Dads.
00:04:16
Hey, you're welcome, Matt. Thanks for joining us. Yeah, man. Hey, thanks for having us. Apparently... What'd you think of that drink? Well, a little bit of PTSD, because when you mentioned family members having black velvet... Aw, it tastes like Grandpa's yelling at me again. Yep. My motto is always never trust a bottle of liquor that you can drop and it won't break that's fair but um but yeah you're right you don't make it sturdy you don't taste it until the end um yeah it wasn't with uh if i didn't know it was black belt like if i would have saw the bottle i wouldn't notice you know i mean it's solid stuff man you know what i almost bought us today real quick was uh i knew they made a rumplements came out with their own version of like fireball it's like cinnamon yeah rumplements they had shooters of it but i was We're already doing two in a row. I'm not doing that to us today.
00:05:10
The Black Velvet Salted Caramel to me, where I got turned on to it is everybody was doing Fireball and Rag Bri and all this stuff and I'm like so sick of Fireball. Yeah, I can't do it anymore. People would bring out Salted Caramel and I'm like, ooh, I could do that. As a shooter? Yeah. Oh yeah.
00:05:28
Thanks for being on, buddy. I was telling you beforehand, apparently we can only have drummers on that are from local bands. It is interesting. It makes sense. I was going to say, because you were saying when we were talking before, you're like, yeah, because the drummer runs everything. So, no? They do. And like I was saying, that was not the intent when we started our band. Everybody had a job that we kind of divvied out and slowly but surely I took over every single one of those jobs because, you know, those guys were just fucking dropping the balls. Yeah. I feel you. That's how I am with these guys.
00:06:01
They don't do anything. It gets old. I had to text them five times. They even confirmed we're doing this fucking thing. So rest of us for doing fucking yard work and responsible shit. He's that you're gone So what about this? Hey listeners, I'm sorry if you're wondering who cares about you most it's me so But no man we want to bring you on cuz so like I've listened to you guys I've known you for a few years. I met you through a friend Julie who is the opening voice that blew my mind We're hearing Julie's 900 number voice and he's like wait what I was like he goes that's her ego. Yeah, and he's like his like eyes She's got it down. She's pretty good.
00:06:39
She's got a 900 number voice for sure. I'll never look at her the same way. She'll love that. Ask her to do a little monologue. But yeah, I met you through her, and then I remember seeing you guys the first time quite a few years ago. Where was it? That was at Chrome Horse. Okay. That was when it was still there. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Dude, that venue was great for like that. That size band and all that. I loved that place. Just live music in general. Yeah. It's one of the few places in town that did it. And they're slowly and surely just kind of falling away. It kind of sucks to see. I loved it.
00:07:19
It felt like it was always busy. When you guys were in there, the first time I saw you guys, it was packed in there. All of our friends were there. I don't know. It's weird that it didn't last. And now I notice bands going into smaller venues where I kind of look at the venue and go like, I don't know if I'd have a band in here. It sounds terrible. Not saying you guys do that. I haven't seen you guys there. Definitely a balance. We'll have not to sound, I don't know. The bigger we get, we'll get more inquiries and we'll get places that will reach out to us and be like, A, have you heard us play before?
00:07:57
B, do you know how loud we are? We're just not going to be the greatest fit. That and weddings. sure we're just we're not a wedding band i mean we have people reach out to us about weddings and like if you understand who we are great we'll show up and play but i mean we're not we're not doing there's a price on everything we'll get you at a wedding at the same time if you're not a good fit then it's not going to work you know i mean they're not going to be happy you know i mean and it puts a bigger stain on what you do then yeah you're not being mean you're just going this isn't going to I just want to make sure they know.
00:08:29
And if you know, then hell yeah, we'll show up. We'll rock and it'll be fun. Well, because at the end, it's like you care about the product. Like, you don't want to go somewhere and sound like shit. Because you don't sound like shit. So, yeah, it's just, I don't know. I've noticed that where it's these places. I kind of walk in. I'm like, this is, look, if this was like a two-person thing where, like, there's maybe someone playing guitar and the other person just singing, that would be fine. But, like, for a full band as, like, as loud as you guys are, like I said, it's just weird to me. So, my favorite place is Beef Days and watching you guys kind of come up through there and get bigger and bigger.
00:08:58
and now it's like you're the headline. That's the one that everyone's lined up for. You guys are a soul in band. We are a soul in band, and we are headlining Beef Days this year.
00:09:11
It's a home game for us. But it's a great crowd. It's outside. It's like a perfect atmosphere. It's actually one of the better outdoor that place is put on for that area. You know what I mean? It just kind of fits good. It is because it's in that one block area. So everything is just automatically already just kind of enclosed. And like Friday night, they have that hay bale toss. Yeah. And you've got 1,000 people looking one way watching this hay bale toss. And then as soon as that's done, the band hits the first note of their set, and everyone just turns.
00:09:54
It's true. You're looking one way and then it's like, bow face, here we go. All right, let's go. Yeah, and you immediately feel like you've just, we've made it. Right. I told you we should follow the hay bale toss. Yeah. So are you guys Saturday this year then? Yeah. Okay. Yeah, we're Saturday.
00:10:12
Because we've been, obviously, since we've lived out there, we've gone. And it's always like Friday night, I feel like we always take our kids. You know what I mean? And that's the night they do that. I mean, they're getting older now, but we would do it when they were younger. we'd do that and then saturday we'd go back generally without the kids you know i mean we'd be at like we go for the concert or whatever was going on it was more of that thing but friday it was always much more of like bringing them there and letting them run around go crazy and then saturday be more than that so i think that's kind of how it's been and and i think it's a lot of it is if i remember like yeah they kind of friday's family night and then a lot of times saturday they do reunions like a lot of the solon high school they'll all meet back oh yeah i didn't know that Well, it's like a reunion because they're all there.
00:10:55
They'll come back and there's classes. That's awesome. Yeah, for sure. And another piece about me is being a basketball coach at Solon. Oh, shit. Yeah, so I've done that. I don't do it anymore, but for seven years I did it. And so now those guys come back on that Saturday night. So that's cool. I want to get a chance to talk to them this year. Oh, that's awesome. So were you coaching at a high school then? Yeah. Okay. Well, it's pretty cool because they get to come back and be like guys my basketball coach is the drum I Know by the way, I can buy you a shot I like I grew up I spent a couple summers and so my cousin JT lives there He's still there now, but like beef days was such a big thing. It still is but it's weird when we went, I don't know, it was the time, but we've talked about this when we talked about our naked girls on calendars still cool. All the prizes were like a stained glass thing of a naked girl or a center fold picture that you could take home to your room. Now it's not like that anymore. You're saying when you were a kid?
00:12:08
Yeah. Yeah. Beef days? Yeah. Every year that's how it was. Is that what you're talking about? Any of the games. I remember one time I was at one of those and it wasn't beef days but i was at a different one and it the little mirrors it was like the mirror that has the last mirrors the little mirror and you have the same i remember i had i picked out the uh bart simpson one that said eat my shorts and they wouldn't give it to me and they're like your parents need to come up and approve this i'm like oh dude beef days didn't give a they were like here here's a here's a chick full clam you're like what show your dad this he's gonna love it yeah he's like he's gonna put that in his garage for sure but he's in the Legion that's awesome but I gotta ask though who came up with the name yeah the fucking name is so good it is such a good name it it really was it was a pure luck sure we were you know we all have done the coach our kids and in in different sports and we were all hanging out at uh big grove one night and i was already there and one of the guys came in and he had a trophy from one of the like softball or baseball tournaments i can't remember what it was that they won.
00:13:36
He sets it down on one of the high tops and he goes, I'm a trophy dad. And it wasn't me. One of the other guys goes, that's our name. That is so good. It was just complete because the names we had were just, they were lame. What were some of the other ones? The only one I can remember was 2am. And it was so lame. Why 2am? When we sound the best. so we always wanted it to be something where we don't take ourselves like too seriously so that was always going to be the vibe like yeah yeah you know the the the drunker you get the better we sound that type of thing but then just trophy does just it's so perfect it's so like yeah just for that chill relax like good time like don't take yourself too serious we're gonna have fun and you're going to like I when I show up I expect to see before I even heard you play I expect it to be a fun you know good time man yeah party band type deal then then yeah so I gotta say my mind is spinning now thinking of names that it could have been and I'm like the fornicating father how many freaking band names have we come up on this podcast oh that's a great band name we need to start writing them down well we could go I mean we have all the URLs right I was gonna say, Logan buys every URL to say.
00:14:59
Is Fornicating Fathers available? I'm on it. Let me see it. I laugh at it because when we were starting the podcast or when we were talking about it, Mike and I came up with a fucking great name and neither of us remember it. We were drinking at the bar. We were talking about wanting to do this and then it was like, that's a perfect name and sounds good. Next day I'm like, do you remember what we talked about for the names? I was like, ah, fuck, I don't remember either. If only we had something in our hands with a notepad, we could write whatever we want. We only had one of these magical little devices. You could like talk to it and tell it what you were thinking.
00:15:32
It could have done everything. Actually, I'm surprised we didn't see sales. It must have been that good of a name. But it took us like seven episodes to even come up with the name that we're using. It's true.
00:15:45
A quick update. Fornicatingfathers.com is available. Yes So is Fornicating Fathers with a four at the beginning of it Oh that way we like the fantastic four I like that Yeah Fornicatingmothers is available Whoa that was a pause And you can also get things like fornicatingfathers fornicatingfathers.dating, and fornicatingfathers.singles. Ooh. Get them all. We're just starting a dating app now. We're still cool right dating. I'm not sure what we're starting. But we sure as hell are going to finish it. I'm shocked that we're starting something, baby. But we'll finish. I'm just shocked that you were always available if I'm being honest because the amount of porn in this world like I Kind of I thought for sure it would redirect to Exactly, isn't that the rule like if you can think it a porn exists about it Fantastic for fornicating fathers You actually end up on like kind of scary religious side of the internet if you type in fornicating fathers Oh Well, there's kids for everything Are you in incognito mode right now?
00:16:46
I'm surprised that fucking laptop hasn't melted. At least we've asked him to look up before. There was one time they busted him through the door and lit us up, but yeah. I did pay extra for the laptop that could handle this. This is for a podcast that I do for a bunch of idiots. Thanks, Apple. Apple sponsor us. us hey we have talked many times about we need to designate a person to clear our browser that one needs it the most yeah press it buddy yeah that is the key so uh what's your summer like for the band what do you guys like upcoming shows all that stuff yeah we um we're still kind of in our um we kind of ramp up about a show a month um in the call kind of fall winter early spring and and we've just kind of gotten through that last bit of just one a month and then we're gonna we'll be ramping up we're actually off in march or in may which is a little different for us yeah but then every weekend you hit hard yeah every weekend in june like almost every weekend in july every weekend in august my guys hate jesus yep my guys hate me because i mean but it's the time to do it right you know i mean it's the time to do it the weather's nice the outdoor shows everybody likes it's not too loud and see i'm kind of like i i'm older i mean and i fucking love loud music but when i go to a bar i'm doing more than just
00:18:17
like watching like i'm talking also i love going to outside stuff for that same thing like i i totally get to go in and just like lock in and then i get to talk you know i mean i kind of go back and forth on both yeah so we um so like we said we're doing we're doing beef days that's going to probably be our highlight of the year, but we're going to be in Mechanicsville. I think they call it Pork Center Days in Mechanicsville, Iowa. Oh, shit. The thriving metropolis there. Yeah. I thought it was going to be a fucking good time, though. I mean, you get that same thing. The small town shows are the best. Everyone shows up, right?
00:18:51
They show up. And we look forward to those kinds of shows. But they're showing up to have fun. They want to be a part of it. Yeah, it's a total. I mean, you guys play a lot of dad rock is what I would call it now. We didn't used to call it dad rock, but that's what we call it now. No, I've heard people describe it as divorce dad music, which is not totally true. But I should have said this. It's mostly 90s and 2000s, right? Mostly 90s and 2000s. It's like we're at the age now when the songs come on the radio, we're like, what the hell is this shit? But then we're at the grocery store and they're like banger after banger Oh my god When I'm walking down and I hear a certain song And no one's caring And I'm like what are you doing Why aren't you stopping to take this in We talked before the podcast about how At our age People 40 or older We don't really find a lot of new music It happens but we're not searching for it It's like we have a giant catalog So that's why I said I love cover bands so much Because my favorite thing to listen to Is 90s and 2000s Yeah. Well, and I've always said that too about when I go to a bar, that's what I want to listen to more of that than originals. You know what I mean? Like, God, like I respect that. And, you know, I hope your original goes and blows up. But like when I'm there, like I said, like I will, the band's a part of it and I'd love to see it, but it's generally not the number one thing I go to unless I'm going to more to a breakout concert.
00:20:20
I like to go hear the band talk for a little while. You know what I mean? I like bounce back and forth or like when you play that banger, I'm like, oh, I got to get up there. Like, conversation stop. Yeah, I want to hear that. That's the best feeling for us. We'll play a song that we like and we think we like and okay, sometimes it's the best. But you can tell the crowd's like, okay. But then when you do play the song, everybody just gets up and like, it's just not even our song. But it's just like an ego. It's got to be. Yeah, an ego rush, but it's an adrenaline rush for sure. And I'll tell you what, as somebody who's been there drinking before, it might as well be your song.
00:20:57
Because I'm giving you all the energy. I'm like, yeah, especially if it's done well, you know what I mean? Then it's like that same thing. And that's the thing about Iowa, Eastern Iowa. There are so many good cover bands. You could go and see someone like us or Pork Tornadoes or Not Quite Brothers or New Trick or you name it. There's just some dogs on skis. Remember those guys? Yeah. They're still around. You can go and find good quality musicians playing the stuff that we grew up on. That's fun. Or our dads grew up on that our dad made us listen to. yeah like i i i i love you guys obviously no matter what because i love the music you play but you play limp biscuit and that's my shit and my kids think it's the stupidest thing in the world and i don't care that actually makes me like it more because i'm like it's mine i own it right you don't have to like it you don't get to yeah you don't get to like it yeah but i wanted to say i don't even want to put this out there because someone's going to steal it but i had this idea like in high school because there was cover bands and everyone remembers the band color me bad so I was like you know what a great band name would be for a cover band is Cover Me Bad because like if I could sing I would have started already but I'm terrible how funny would that be though I mean it fits because you're covering bad the problem is you kind of do want people to come see it though so if you ever want to start
00:22:28
a second man I'm in is the deal like you cover songs but you just do it poorly no it's you try really good you try your hardest but it's not good I was like oh you're just gonna cover it Remember when you watch American Idol and you're like oh they don't even realize how bad they are It's like that you know what I mean Nobody loved them enough to tell them don't do that Exactly yeah they didn't realize they were hurting more than helping Every girl's a princess alright Do you ever watch that show and you're like the parents are right there How did they not tell them Oh a thousand every time Every time I'm like you didn't want to hurt their feelings and now look, now America is going to embarrass them for you. Because the longer we went, we fucking realized they got paid like a million dollars to sound like that shit. That's also true. Because it's still a TV show. Yeah.
00:23:16
I mean, William Hung, wasn't that the Yeah, she banged. Yeah. Was that him? Yeah. Oh yeah, Ricky Martin. So there's an episode of The Office where he comes out and there's a guy named Todd Packard. He's just like a misogynistic asshole. Yeah. And his license plate says... Yeah, we've never seen The Office before. Some people haven't. What is this called? What's this thing? See? Do you know what I'm What's his license plate say? So you don't know. It says, his license plate says W-L-L-H-U-N-G and the guy goes, oh, a huge William Hung fan. He goes, why does everyone keep asking me that?
00:23:52
So anytime I hear William Hung, that's all I think about. All right, so what is your background? What's your history on this stuff? When did you guys start? When did you guys put the band together? When I started when I met him, I don't think you the band had started yet. And so I had no idea He was a fucking drummer. So all of a sudden she was like we gotta go see the trophy dads and I'm like who And she goes Matt's the drummer. I go Matt who it's told me go he plays drums, right? So You didn't that seemed like a shock to you a little bit Yeah, well when you don't know someone's like a drummer to the point where they're they're willing to start a band and like go With it, you know what I mean? It's yeah It's actually a very long story that I could draw. I mean it could be its own episode but you know we can make that long story short it was just my neighbor and uh is the the the guitar player in our band spangler yeah yeah yeah yeah shout out to jake um he'll appreciate it i mean he's frankly mad he doesn't get enough attention 28 seconds or 28 minutes into it he hasn't been you know we haven't said his name yet am i not calm down jason all right we got you Yeah, he and our neighbors, he and I grew up together in West Branch.
00:25:00
And I just knew he, you know, I played drums in high school. He played guitar in high school. And we were just kind of just messing around Friday night, just acoustic guitar singing. And he's like, what are we doing? Like, why don't you play? You play drums. And our neighbor over here, he can sing. What are we doing? Let's do something. And then our other guy was just sitting there watching us. He goes, well, my brother plays bass.
00:25:34
All right. And we just started just getting a band. We just got a band, and we just put together enough songs where we could go beg a place to let us play. Sure. For free. Yeah, just give us the chance. Herb and Luz in West Branch, Iowa. Yes. Shout out to Herb and Luz. Amen. Put us in the corner by the freaking claw machine.
00:25:58
Sir, can you stop playing? I am going for that teddy bear real quick. And, yeah, we played. And just, like, that was fun. You want to do it again? Yeah, we did it again. And should we start a Facebook page? Yeah, I don't know. Should we? I don't know. It feels very official. Yeah, yeah. And it just kind of just grew from there. Kind of snowballed. It just kind of snowballed. We get from playing a show every three months to just slowly just... Yeah. And then before you know it, there's merch. Merch. Right. They got the merch and the whole thing and your headline beef days. I think it's cool. I think it's really fucking cool.
00:26:36
From dads who are in their 40s, it's like, I appreciate you guys so much. Because, yeah, it's my favorite shit. So it's what I want to hear. And I know I'm not the only one. You guys have a show coming up at Double Z's. I know you're playing Double Z's in June. Yep. Sorry, on my calendar. We're going there. yeah will that be outdoor yeah it will be they got like a little outdoor stage trailer yeah yeah it's fun and there's again like venues in Cedar Rapids that support live music he's James is one of them yeah sure yeah that place is awesome well they got a good setup like now with that parking lot in the back bigger and like some of those buildings you know it's it's just a different setup than it was a few years ago than what it was so that's cool yeah so you You obviously were a drummer in high school.
00:27:22
Did you? Oh, yeah. You wanted to ask about my musical background. My thing was more like, did you still practiced for fun because you just love playing? No. I didn't play for 20 years. Really? Holy shit. So did you have any other band, other than a high school band or anything like that? West Branch High School Jazz Band. Nice. And. Yep. Exactly. And the hi-hat. And the hi-hat. With the hi-hat. Boom. Yeah. Is that flying to the moon? You should bust that out. Right after, like, you know, you're rapping as, like, Fred Durst. It should be like.
00:27:57
Yeah, I want to hear a little jazz in the next show. Yeah, I mean, that was the extent of my drumming was that and playing in the pep band and shit. And then went to college and sold my freaking drums and just got out of it. And my son was going to be in fifth grade and he wanted to get into percussion. I'm like, yeah, of course you did. Sure. Yeah. And so it made sense to buy him a drum kit for Christmas. Hold on. I can just see him setting it up, and he's like, pushes it back away. He's like, that is my turn.
00:28:34
I never said this was yours. Bought him the drum kit, and then, yeah, it didn't take very long before. I mean, okay, that's my practice kit. And then, yeah, so then I just started playing again. And so it was, yeah, I literally stopped playing in 1990. That's crazy. And picked it back up again in 2018. Wow. Okay. So that's kind of what you're doing. But the rhythm never leaves you. Right. It's in your blood, baby. It's in my soul. Yeah. So is that when you guys started then? Was it 2018? 2018, yeah. We were like, well, what the hell are we doing? Let's just start jamming, whatever. Sure. We called it jamming because they did want to call it practice.
00:29:18
Because then we would have to tell our wives we were practicing sure and that would be something official No, no, we're just getting together and we're just jamming. Yeah, you guys still jamming now Practice implies that you bring home some money from this thing. Come on feed the kitty. What are we doing? Yeah, but then why is like well, I noticed you're We're not getting any money, IRS. That's weird. What's going on over there? So you guys all live in Solon then? Yep. Or at least did when it started. No, we all live in Solon. The one guy that lives in Ely is from Solon. Oh, Ely and Solon. It's like Marion and Cedar Avenue.
00:29:56
Correct. It's the same thing. Yeah. So last week when we recorded, if you guys remember this, a guy came in. So there was a podcast before us, and a guy came in. He goes, have you guys heard of the Trophy Dads? Yeah. And I was like, that's hilarious. Matt was going to be on today, but he had something come up. I don't know who that guy was, but he knows you guys. But it was totally random that he said that. Great story. That's the story? That's a fucking great story. Hold on. And then I found $5. I'm glad you fucking saved that. I'm glad you saved that. We got all this equipment out for you to fucking tell that story.
00:30:28
You're welcome. Well, I just figured you guys forgot it, and I want to refresh memories. You're a lot older than I am. That's true. no but i do remember we were gavin palma came up to us at the bar and mentioned something about having yeah that's true that was right before that yeah so that was another type thing but yeah all right so part of what we do here is we like to kind of break down what's still cool right and some of it's nostalgia some of it's whatever and so i wanted to first we gotta we gotta ask the one question here um do you pee in the shower i have Would you call yourself Someone who pees in the shower Or a non Peer in the shower Is a peer in the shower Someone who has done it before Or more than once Because here's the thing I will tell you this 90% of people are peeing in the shower We're the majority The warm water hits it just starts going It's biology at that point It's still weird to me But okay whatever yeah i basically we have like i don't i never even have and i thought that was normal and now i've learned basically my whole life got turned upside down because everyone we talked to and bring this up to is like yeah why wouldn you and i like what the fuck why like because the toilet right there but well i don i don know if i feel that strongly about a why wouldn you It more just like it just happening I never knew warm water
00:31:59
affected people that strongly. If I have to pee before I get in the shower, I don't pee in the shower. Sure. But if I get in the shower and I have to pee, it just happens. I guess I just thought everyone was like me and just auto-peed before the shower. Because I've said, it's the dumbest superpower ever but mine is that i can pee at whenever you ask it is one of our um humble brag i know i know i know never been a drug test i couldn't do um it is one of the weird things that we have asked that have gotten so much response where people want to fucking know or they feel strongly one way or another like i'm pro fuck yeah i pee in the shower or you sick fuck i can't believe that you do this so um we've been at a pool party before and everyone's like, alright, you guys brought us up on the podcast. If you pee on that side of the pool, if you don't, over there. And I was like, okay. It was you and like three people. It was like me and three girls.
00:32:50
And then there was like 90 people who pee in the shower. I was like, god damn it. Which means they pee in the pool. Yeah, well, I'm sure everyone's like that. They'll pee in the pools. Yeah, yeah. You haven't gotten out of the pool for three hours. What's going on? That's only when you're at a resort. You don't want to pee that to me. I've got a weird pee thing in water. It's hard for me. So, my feet have to be touching. so that was one of our anchor questions yeah um did you guys have any other anchor one if i gotta i gotta still cool yeah this loosely loosely related um is it still cool to play an instrument like i in my mind when i wrote this down i was thinking like sitting on a beach playing a guitar for a girl you know i mean like you saw what you saw in the movies you're setting the mood but like is it still cool to play an instrument for a girl?
00:33:41
Like, even drums. Is it something where you could show off to a girl doing this? You can call Carrie right now and put her on if you want. She would not be the greatest person to ask. She's like, I told him to stop playing music. So that's the question. Drums are different because we are by default annoying. Okay, but hold on. If she starts walking down the stairs and just hears That's kind of nice. So she comes to our shows and I just always joke. Remember the Muppets, the two old guys in the house? That's her. Like, you guys are great before electricity.
00:34:21
Rude, Carrie. She appreciates you have rhythm. That is what it all boils down to. This is why the drummer always comes out on top. He's got rhythm, all right? You know where that translates, right? It's 100% like, yes. Why do you think we only have drummers on?
00:34:41
To answer your question, though, yeah, let's bring it back. Yeah, it's still cool. I think I have to answer it that way. I mean, it has to still be cool. I just wonder, though. I mean, I'm curious about it because my son's a, you know, he's going to be a freshman. You know, he's kind of in that part of it. i'm like any of your buddies like music play band you know like they'll a lot of them are in you know school band or whatever but like that whole thing of like putting together like a band because so forever to be in uh percussion you had to have you had to take piano lessons like that was the only way you could be in it which is the dumbest rule well so then for his class nobody was in percussion and so they opened it up and i'm like do it and so he was doing it and then he's like yeah i don't know about this i'm like you you don't know like do i'm like i'd want you to stick with this so bad because someday you can get get older and all of a sudden i'm gonna start a band with my boys and once you know this you'll be able to go back to it or whatnot and he ended up not it's like the only thing that he doesn't do you know what i mean that he started and doesn't do but i don't know that i see that as much because i remember in high school a couple of our friends that played guitar. Fuck.
00:36:00
Every girl loved them. Yeah. Guitar is cool. Clarinet is not cool. That's fair. Hey baby, you ready? That's a flute. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Whatever. I don't know where to put my hands. They were enough interested into it that he taught himself. You got the book and that sort of thing. but I don't hear or see of any of my kids. So here's the thing. This conversation happened today, bringing it back to dad's. My son, who's 18 now, sitting on the couch watching something. He goes, I wish you would have forced me to do more things that I should have done. It's your fault. And I went, like, what? I go, do you wish I'd forced you to wrestle? And he goes, no. And I was like, to play football? Because he did play most sports, but he didn't do those. He goes, no. But I wish you would have forced me to take guitar lessons because I wish I could play guitar now and i go oh i'm sorry did i not did i drop the ball not knowing what i should have guessed for you 10 years later oh and by the way you can do it right now like i told him he goes but dad you absorb so much more when you're younger i can't believe i didn't foresee the future of you wanting to play guitar he's like it's just so cool to play guitar i'm like go buy one and take lessons you're 18 you're not 43 like what are you talking about it's not your fault thank you that's honestly I was gonna keep stoking the fire Erik's like shit it better you piece of shit
00:37:32
You shit in the shower Waffle stomp it down it's fine Trophy dads would be a sick podcast name too Did you trademark it? Grab it Ask him for a friend Do you have the URL? Check out trademark. Do you have the website?
00:37:55
TrophyDadsBand? TrophyDads.band Yeah, so you know there's an actual TrophyDads. We don't use it. We use Facebook. Facebook. We're just good at sniping URLs. Basically, if the podcast goes under, it's like, hey, we have a thousand URLs that are never going to sell. Look at us. So, do you play any other instruments? play a little piano. Okay. Just enough to be annoying. Sure. Enough so you could play drums. Like the whole rule. I know. I know that wasn't a thing. I hate that rule. I know. It's stupid. Okay. I'm getting on my soapbox. I got you. I got you. There we go. Get it going, Charlie. There we go.
00:38:33
My kid was going to do percussion, and he hadn't taken piano lessons, and the instructor wasn't going to let him play drums, percussion, because he hadn't taken piano lessons. Piano lessons, yeah. Well, why? Well, you're going to have to know scales because of xylophone and bells and whatnot. Yeah. Do you have that same rule for trumpet players? No. Do they need to know scales? Yeah. Yeah? Oh.
00:39:02
Then why is that a rule? Well, if we didn't do that, then everyone would want to play drums. Oh, okay. So that's why it is? That's why it is. Oh, okay. So how many drummers or percussionists do you have? Two. Yeah. What the fuck are we even doing here? Yeah, what are you doing? You're making a big thing. Yeah. So here, okay. Can I? Yeah. Floor is yours, man.
00:39:27
I'm not proud of this. I circumvented the rules. I said, hey, okay, if I sign him up for piano lessons, will you just let him be in percussion? Oh, yeah, sure, sure, sure. Didn't do it. Right. His dad's a fucking drummer in a band Can we go ahead and ride this I mean, okay, do you know who I am?
00:39:49
I'm a huge deal If you're ever to pull out that card, that's what it needs to be Why are we thwarting The enthusiasm People who want to do it Because then if it's like Well, that's all they want to do So why would you stop them? Because then you're also complaining that kids don't want to play music anymore You took away the instrument they wanted to play And then if they get in I kind of like the way that sounds Also if there's 20 people who want to play drums Great and guess what The best one is going to start It's like sports Is that the worst thing in the world To have 30 percussionists In a little small school Right It's not the worst thing in the world It's not because there's lots of different shit That they can do that all can go at the same time I'm off Who saw remember your pressure point you got this and another thing alright so fuck peeing in the shower my question for this week was going to be fuzz busters remember that or not do you remember those they're technically illegal I think they always have been oh like a radar detector yeah so Benjoit Yeah, yeah, yeah, Benjo text me a second. I forgot the old slide. Why are you busting fun?
00:41:13
Benjo text me is like gave me a couple of these like, how about yeah, he said radar detector I'm like, I remember it was fuzz busters, but like that's what we call it Because the fuzz is going so Logan sent me one This is like when he was 16 start driving. He's like this is what my buddy has I need one It was like $700 and I go what are you doing that you need this? He goes, he just said, like, then, like, cops will never pull me over. And I'm like, we're good. I was like, that's A, not how it works. Yeah, I was like, actually, no, you should have been like, yeah, you're right. Yep, that's exactly how it works.
00:41:44
Go ahead and buy it and see how far you get. Yeah. Well, I remember him being a big deal. Like, it was, like, everybody had them. My uncles had them, and they would, like, if a cop was around, they'd, like, slyly grab it and put it under their seat. Like, if you were, like, you have an unmarked weapon or something. Yeah. Or unregistered. Yeah. you'd be driving by any hy-vee and to be going off yeah yeah and they'd be like i don't know i always want my hy-vee accurate they actually are because it was the anytime anything that had like a uh like a sensor like for motion doors it would set it off really yeah so you'd be driving by those things to go off all the time yeah so technically they're not illegal really yeah okay and i think it's been this way for a long time even back like when we were younger sure it's not illegal to have a detector it is illegal to have a jammer so anything that would prevent that makes detection that's like fast and the furious stuff right like i mean that's yeah okay um never had one the thing is this is i remember friends having them growing up if you have one you're more likely to get a ticket they're gonna see it and they're gonna be like yeah we're giving you a ticket we're not giving you a warning because you didn't know yeah you knew and you got yeah yeah do you know how fast you're going hold on I'll check my radar detector oh 95 I'm fucked how long were you following me for well you passed 12 cars including my partner yeah you're fucked but they're not illegal
00:43:17
I swore to god they were but they're also they're kind of worthless now with lasers and the only thing that a laser detector will do will tell you that they fucking nailed you right most of it they've already got you and yeah they already got you it's like boop oh yeah you got yeah or i remember like them going off i'm like it goes off every half block oh no it's only past the fourth light it's when it gets past the fourth light then we worry about it otherwise it's just pick it up the funniest thing is all that did was probably make people slow down way more than they were going to because it beat because you're right it beeped all the time oh shit yeah oh good we're good oh god like so i don't know i don't want to get one and try they were a big deal they were a super big deal and i remember um my dad had had a bmw and his was built into it like it was down on the on yeah down on the side where that thing would go off all the time but it was built in to the front of it so he never sat on the dash it was down here so even if he got pulled over you wouldn't see that was original equipment yeah It was like a fucking 89 or 87.
00:44:31
Back before they got all serious. It was fucking sweet car, but he had it in the 90s. So are we asking if Fuzzbusters are still cool? It's also still cool slash nostalgia a little bit. You don't see a little bit anymore, but it's also worth the conversation a little bit. Whenever you see one now, you're like... You used to see them all... that and like alarms yeah yeah back when it used to be fun to like pipe this car protected by a viper yes those are some fucking what was the stick thing that attached to the club the club yes yes the club you never know when that car is going to get broken into in westbridge i just remember going into a vintage store like seven years ago and seeing one i'm like oh, it's the club.
00:45:22
Did they have the key for it? Probably not. No. But if you want just a nostalgic, I know. You can open it up, and then you're fucking never getting it off again. I'm good. I'll just buy a boot for my tire. It's fine.
00:45:34
So I was going to โ€“ I can't stop thinking about Fuzzbusters now because they still sell them. Well, we need to put it to a vote. Can I throw in one more thing? Please. Just because I just went on a road trip on the last few days. Did you use a Fuzzbuster? I think that was before my time I've never seen one but one thing that is interesting is now you have Google Maps or Apple Maps or whatever on your dash and what will happen is people will report if there's a speed check Kara does that, she has like Waze Waze does it too Apple Maps does it now too because we'll get them all the time Ashley's always like oh there's a cop ahead I probably wouldn't worry about it Kara's like on it, she's like no Marty's really committed to updating it You have to.
00:46:19
Also, if you're on a road trip, you don't have shit else to do. I will tell you, it's a thousand times better than the Fuzzbuster. Just so we're all clear. That is stopped. Yeah, because I know it's coming as opposed to it's too late. I'm fucking.
00:46:33
Also, do people like I still do this and maybe this dates me, but I don't give a shit. But like, do you still flash your lights? People like, let's say you blow by a guy. That's illegal. Wait, really? It is illegal. Oh, what? Really? Yeah. You're full of shit. No, I swear to God. That's what they taught me when I was in driver's ed. Oh, I didn't know that. So back in the day, that's what you did. If there was a cop like clocking people, you'd... Right in between Highway 1, halfway between Solon and Iowa State, a guy fucker sits right there by the Newport Road. Oh, he sits there all the time. I always give a heads up.
00:47:08
Fuck you. I always give a heads up because I don't care. Obviously, when I'm out at the center of their site, whatever. We're all in this together. Yeah, we're always together. We're not, yeah. Yeah, we always flashed our lights. That was like- It's us for so many. Then they made a horror movie where someone flashed their lights. Somebody's like, oh, you're dead. And started- Oh, we have gang initiation. Yeah, right. They're like, well, now we have to kill you. And I was like, oh, shit. So flashing your lights exists in a legal gray area in Iowa. I love this. Because technically you saying that there are police is protected by your free speech under the First Amendment I thought this was America But also flashing your lights can be considered trying to dazzle someone or obstruct their vision and they can cite you for that So you can actually get a ticket for flashing your lights.
00:47:56
So just a cop feels that day. Well, you're not in trouble for notifying them of a cop. But if they can't do that, they'll give you a ticket for something else. They always find a way to fucking land. Don't get me started. Get back on your soapbox, man. Get up there. Show us how it is. That's according to the Google. The Google. Gemini is helping us out here. Yeah. Fair. All right. I had one other thing I wanted to ask you for sure, which is just like. Wait, Fuzzbusters cool or not? Oh, sorry. Yeah. I'm bad about it. They're not still cool. They are nostalgically cool for sure. Correct. Because it reminds me of just rolling to my uncles.
00:48:32
And as annoying as that beeping was, I'd love to hear it right now. Right. You knew there was somebody like you're, yeah, you're with your cool uncle. But I will say, again, my son, when he turned 16, one of his friends had already bought one. So I guarantee there's people out there who buy them and think it's doing a lot. I don't think it's probably doing a lot, though. Never did. Yeah, exactly. I think it's probably like dumb kids that think they're racing on First Avenue. 100%. Yeah. I think it's cool. Yeah. Which used to be us, but we just didn't have fuzzbusters. Nostalgia cool. Oh, you mean radar detectors?
00:49:04
Oh, that's what they're called? Shit, my bad. Yeah. So we're going to hit it with a not cool Not cool Boo this man We really need to get sound effects I saw you going like this And I was like oh fuck did he add a new one I didn't know what you were going to do Wait I do have one don't I No that's for when I say something stupid We don't need to bring that back Otherwise the whole thing is going to be that sound Did you have one? Did he find it? I was thinking you had one but I guess I was wrong. No, I did the guitars. Oh, that's right. No, but I had more for my... So I like to ask people this as far as the band goes.
00:49:43
What is your personal favorite song to do? Like, and it doesn't have to be like we do this one the best. Like, it's the most fun for you.
00:49:55
I put them in tears. Like... You make them cry? Attaboy. Tears. Yeah, yeah. Layers. Layers. It's like an onion. Layers. my own worst enemy by lit oh shit break stuff limpus there it is i was saying because you rap that one i do yeah we're working on another limp biscuit song i didn't want to i wanted to kind of slow play that one guys hear that that was my dick hitting the bottom side of the table but then like nostalgia like even flow pearl jam oh yeah that's like if i had my way i we would be would be a we would be a grunge band we would be a total grunge band which would be a not a female friendly uh genre exactly yeah yeah but like you'd be okay like you would do a full just grunge thing fuck yeah yeah you're right though that's like hard to make happen now yeah yeah yeah but like but then also like two two weeks ago my son texted me he goes why don't you play rooster by alice and I'm like, A, I fucking love you.
00:51:00
Right, yeah. And like, B, you're right. I don't know why we don't. I don't have a good answer to that. Don't even start on that. I'm weird, and I'm not saying anything bad about him, but I have this weird thing, and it drives people crazy. I like Nirvana in what they're, I know they're good, but like Kurt Cobain's voice drives me crazy. Yeah, you're not alone. You're not alone. I'm not. No, you're not alone. It makes me feel like I'm a psychopath for that. I'm like, dude, I was a huge asshole. Well, you are. There's plenty of psychos. Okay, fair. Nirvana is polarizing because for that reason. Yeah.
00:51:31
But they changed music, so you can't โ€“ they changed music, so you can't deny that. No, I don't hate them. It's like I love what they did for music, but I'm like when Nirvana comes on, I turn the channel. It's not my shit. People get pissed at me because I don't like Red Hot Chili Peppers. I'm not a big fan. They are very polarizing because Anthony Akita's โ€“ that's โ€“ Everything he does. And everything is California. and but I mean Flea's the fucking best bass player in the world and Chad Smith is one of the best drummers of all time Will Ferrell I was going to say I thought it was Will Ferrell and yeah I mean but Red Hot Chili Peppers right there with Nirvana so don't feel bad about that makes me feel better my son you know everyone your age loves Nirvana right I know that's why I used to be a Nirvana shamer.
00:52:26
I'm like, how could you not? But then I'm like, okay, I kind of get it. I mean, I'll always be like, I'll listen to from Bleach, their first album, to In Utero. And I love it all. But I get how. You got to respect them because they change music. But whether you like it or not, I could be, yeah. Like tall. Yeah. So, okay. So back to your question. My own worst enemy lit. Break stuff. uh, Limp Bizkit, even flow, uh, Pearl Jam. And then we do, we kind of do a mashup of, um, Harvey danger. Uh, no, not Harvey. Uh, what's the, Oh shit.
00:53:12
Guys, we made them have a beer. We got them and a shot drop shot flagpole. Yes. Oh, okay. Flagpole Sita. Um, is that Harvey danger? Yeah. And then we go into Rage Against the Machine Oh shit Because you know the Flagpole said they do that Kind of do that That breakdown And Rage Against Machine And then we go right into a Rage song Oh that's awesome Yeah And I mean Rage To this day That's the best concert I ever saw Really? Rage opened for Cypress Hill At the IMU Memorial Union Yeah Alright Fall of 92 which also dates me but change your life I would have loved to have seen it no one knew who Rage was when they came on stage they fucking killed it then Cypress Hill comes on with a big ass fucking joint I was going to say and they like insane in the brain came out Cypress Hill I haven't thought about that by the way plug they are playing at the McGrath Amphitheater this summer. Are they?
00:54:23
The amount of people... I know we're not going, but everyone we know is going. I talked to Tanya from Deck Tires. There's tickets. She was like, I have plans that night when the kids and stuff, I was like, I can't go. But she was like, I can't believe you guys are going. Going to Applebee's that night? It's a big day. I don't know if there will be time. I have to have Home Depot up. I don't know. I need to water my hostas.
00:54:49
all right uh we got this conversation the other uh week what's your favorite french fry style so god so not where i get them from or no no no so take the brand out of it the cut so crinkle fry straight fry waffle fry uh steak fry what is the superior you can only get one can i tell you what i hate sure please oh no you dude i loved you so much until like we almost made it. We almost, why'd you ask that? How is that your how you hate them? When they're undercooked they fucking suck. Every fry sucks if it's undercooked. Nope. It's all doughy. Nope. At least crinkle fries have the crispy pieces. Crinkle fry, okay are we doing this? Yeah, let's go.
00:55:36
Give me something to break. Come on. Crinkle fries are the most crinkle fries are the most prone to being undercooked. So it happens more often. I don't think I feel like steak fries. Steak fries would be the worst.
00:55:52
Is that just a statement of fact? No, I just feel that way. I feel that in my heart. I feel like steak is the worst. It's only funny because we did this the other week and the one thing we agreed on was crinkle cut with my whole ass. I'm so big on... I was like, you had to ask this and fuck it all up, didn't you? My kids get mad because they don't like crinkle fries. They like just the normal style. straight cut creakle fries are my favorite how do you feel about the natural cut fries they're fine as long as they're done right oh they're terrible what's your favorite what's your top one this is by the way tater tot counts we decided that well then that's it but um did we do this on air have we done this yeah we talked about it you don't listen to our show but yeah mcdonald's fries it was part of last week's mcdonald's fries are the goat okay so the straight cut yeah that's it yeah that would be like a and wendy's fries are the worst okay the natural cut that's so but wendy's when we were in high school was the greatest fry like they were the best but then once they switched to the i had i had a teacher in high school who i was late or would leave early from every class but i would bring him a large fry every day and he never marked me excused that was that was the rule there was an unwritten rule what was his name i don't remember French Hold on Did he touch anything?
00:57:11
I wish Is he still a teacher? No, God no I almost said Mr. Gay but that was the Photography teacher I'll never forget his name Why? He gave good Kit Kats You know what I'm saying? Jesus Christ I tried to stare at Logan as I said that But he tried He turned away in disgust.
00:57:40
All right. One last question here of our list of still cool. Mullets. How do you feel about the mullet? Is the mullet still cool? You're from Solon, so... You know what I mean? What does that mean? Because small towns, all the kids get really big into doing mullets. All the wrestlers do it. That's not something that happens in the bigger cities. It was a wrestler. The wrestlers brought it back. Yeah, they did. but now it's all over the place. It's going to be the rage now. Jennings Dunker. Jennings Dunker is going to change the game. By the way, I'm officially sort of a Steelers fan. The guys, they do it differently now because they shave it up the sides.
00:58:19
They make it cool guy, but still the bullet. I kind of dig it. Look, I'll be honest. I'm bald, but if I could grow hair, and seeing him with red hair pulled off i'm like that could have been me like you just gotta lean into it like i feel like it's a commitment like once you have it yeah yeah that's just like all cyclical because now like yeah it comes back the high school guys are doing like straight mustaches yeah it's like like you what are we doing my dad had a mustache in the 70s right and then no one had one but now it comes back and at first it was like oh my god you look horrible but now it's just kind of even still if one of us shaved it down to a mustache, everybody's going to be like, are you a cop or a porn star?
00:59:07
Chester the molester. What are we doing here? You're one of three. Those are all things I don't want to be. Yeah, exactly. God. But I've said that like Tom Selleck had the big thick mustache. If I honestly could grow one of those huge ones, I would try it to see how dumb it looked. You also have to look like Tom Selleck. I'm close. I'm only like two feet short. If you have the face for it, it's a different thing. i uh got tired of my mullet in high school so you had one yeah i yeah hey you didn't i'm jealous no i never had one i had a rat tail remember those yeah my parents didn't love me though it's different but which means you had a mullet and then you cut it into a rat tail or did you just really use let it sprout yeah exactly it just kind of sprouted i was like something's wrong with that guy's head. I had a growth.

I got tired of my mullet and I went to my haircut girl in West Branch, Iowa. Shout out to you, Timmy. Guys and gals hairstyling in West Branch. You had two options. You either went there or you went to go see Hoot at the barbershop and pay five bucks. Hoot. Hoot Gibson. And Hoot gives a fuck. I fucking love that name. Hoot Gibson. Hoot Gibson, five bucks for it, which I eventually started going to him. But okay, so I'll go to Bobby Joe, and I say, hey, I'm tired of my mullet. What can we do? Well, why don't we perm it? That's a move. You permed the mullet. You permed the mullet? Only from like the back three inches.
01:00:45
